Search Engine Optimisation - Siloing ...
Siloing
is now an accepted SEO (Search engine optimisation) jargon and based on
Silos as used in agriculture – In simple terms Silos will store wheat or
barley but not both in the same bin, this is the concept of Siloing
Think of a silo as theme, sector, group, page or whatever. Adopting this policy will help the search engines find your content much easier. Mixing up your “silos” will reduce the value of the commodity, the same applies with the search engines, mixing up the themes will have the same downgrading effect and reducing the search ability.
Without Siloing your site could well be seen as a mishmash of products or services, the result being that the Search Engines are unable to sort out any product / service priority. At the best the search results will be lower than deserved and at worst no positioning at all.
Lets look at a practical example – a website which has seasonality products on offer, there aren’t many but the products change with the seasons and therefore the priority changes. The search engines have difficulty in deciding priorities and if they do the season will probably have passed by. A classic case to apply Siloing : Create separate pages starting with a "top page" which summarises the current events and then vertical linking strategy to the seasons as follows- Current Events
- Spring
- Summer
- Autumn
- Winter
